THOUGHTS OF WINGHAM AND A EULOGY FOR BOB (ANGUS)

I grew up in Wingham, during the 50’s, the rebellion years.  I set light to my parents back yard.   We really enjoyed the fire brigade rushing to our rescue to put the blaze out - it ended up 2 foot from the back door which was visibly scorched.   Paul and I also enjoyed kicking our back door down at Centre st.- it was just like in the movies ,a great laugh.     Paul was a great influence in my life and we had some great times and enjoyed lots of experiences only Wingham could provide.   We once built a raft and cruised down the river but  just after the main highway bridge  we encountered a farmer who was placing a fence right  across the river. We tore it down, he complained .  We countered  that,  although we had torn it down, he had no right to place it there in the first place.  We helped to re-erect the fence and we left it there no loss of face.   Later that year we cycled to Centralia for the air show  - took 2 days to get there  with an overnight stay in our scout tent in a creepy field.   We spent an hour at the air show and cycled back in about an hour just so we could see the movie show at the Lyceum.  We had got bored.  Byron Adams gave us a free ticket to the Lyceum.

I left Wingham to go back to England after 10 years.  We got back to England but weren’t sure about staying.  We returned to Canada within a few months and went to stay in London near my sister.  The budgie died, I went to  the LCCI.   Paul and Bob (Angus) came to see me in London.  It was great childhood once again, but a bit older.  We decided one day to fly to Toronto.  Our first flight.  A great adventure.  We walked from Ridout St to the Airport, took about one hour and a half.  We got on the plane to Toronto.  Took about 25 minutes.  We arrived at Toronto and waited in the lounge.  Waited about 1 hour.  We flew back to London took about 25 minutes.  We landed at London but was delayed about 10 minutes but eventually disembarked.  We walked back to Ridout St.  Took about one and a half hours.  We had a great day.  I later read the Flight magazine I bought every week.  Paul and Bob went back to Wingham.  I later stayed at Jimmie Wild’s house and visited Bob at Wingham - Paul was away.  We never met again.  Bob is now dead.

What a waste, but we enjoyed the experiences together.

We formed a society in 1957 called AMP - designed a badge with wings and everything - reminiscent of the RAF.  AGNES. MOOSE AND POOP  - only M AND P LEFT NOW.  Very sad

Howson Mill Fire in 1950

I remember walking home from Grade two one day and smelling a very large fire burning somewhere, a peculiar smell it was.It was the Howsons Mill which burned to the ground, we could almost see it from our kitchen window.
